FRUITS: A Colorful Introduction
Posted by Lola Granola in Fashion February 17, 2009 at 08:26:37 PM

“It's anime meets candy raver meets Barbie in Super Mario Land,” says one reviewer.

FRUITS is a tasteful compilation of colorful photography, illustrating the bustling fashion scene of Tokyo’s Harajuku district. Photographed by Shoichi Aoki, this book challenges the reader’s take on fashion and stretches the imagination. It is a clash between the modern and the traditional. It is youth expressed in vibrant skirts and jaw-dropping visual statements. FRUITS captures the myriad ways in which the streets of Harajuku are renowned for spectacular pop culture and erratic trends.

The spectrum of fashion appears endless. Each page has its own character, style, and “current obsession”. Punks, gothic lolitas, school princesses, and more splash across each page, filled with energy and individualism. Some inspirations include Vivienne Westwood. For those who are familiar with the manga and anima show NANA, the “punk” Nana’s style icon is indeed Vivienne Westwood. Nana wears a Vivienne Westwood ring given to her by one of her fans. Other inspirations seen in FRUITS include Milk, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Comme des Garçons.

Often, the portraits of the teenagers in FRUITS are of individuals who have created their own clothing. In addition to dress, hair is also a constantly changing feature that captures the attention. Dyes of every color of the rainbow in the form of dreads to short crops accompany each original outfit. Sometimes hair is more important than the outfit itself. An editorial review at amazon.com points out the provocative juxtaposition between the originality of these figures against backdrops featuring global, mass-market chains – for example, The Gap.

FRUITS by Shoichi Aoki is a must see and a vibrant introduction to the fashion world of Japan. Some of these styles will be seen and explained in future articles - influenced by anime and manga.
