Satoshi Kon director of anime such as “Perfect Blue”, "Tokyo Godfathers", “Millennium Actress”, “Paranoia Agent” and “Paprika” has passed away at the age of 47. While the cause of death is unconfirmed, it is believed to be cancer.
At the time of his passing, Satoshi was working at MADHOUSE on a new film Yume-Miru Kikai.
Over at BoingBoing, Jake Adelstein, the very talented author of Tokyo Vice has a review of Yakuza 3 with a slight twist. The people reviewing it are all actual Yakuza.
It's a great read, and a very interesting look into the game.
Written and directed by the same individuals responsible for the surprise 2007 hit Baccano!, Durarara!! offers yet another plunge into a richly realized world of quirky characters and complex relationships. In addition to another exclamation point at the end of the title, this latest offering shifts the action to the streets of modern day Ikebukuro while still managing to retain some of the earlier work’s more fantastical and paranormal elements that kept many fans of the prior series interested through to the end. Unlike Baccano!, it also refrains from the hectic time skips, flash forwards and flash backs that at times so twisted the prior series’ plot into a nigh-incomprehensible morass that it was all but impossible to accurately judge where one was on the show’s timeline.
Otakon, the largest east coast anime convention that is currently taking place in Baltimore, MD has just been evacuated due to a possible fire. The entire building has been cleared at orders from the Fire and Police departments, while they get ready to sweep the building. Otakon hopes to be able to re-open and resume the days events as soon as possible.

Update It was an actual fire, but a minor one. Con is opening again, and people are lining up to get back in. Shame for all the panels that were affected!
While Gundam has had a 1:1 scale model (or so they claim) for about a year now, Eva has been missing out on the action. Well no longer!
Fuji-Q HighLand amusement park has announced that it will open "Evangelion: World - Life-Size EVA-01 Construction Project" on July 23. It will house a 1:1 reconstruction of the scene from Evangelion when Shinji sees Unit 01 for the first time. In addition to the Unit 01 bust, there will also be a full size cockpit mockup that visitors can sit in (and pay to have their pictures taken), life size model of Kaworu, as well as an Eva museum, gallery and video room. There will also be a gift shop selling all things Eva, but those are hard to escape in Japan as-is.
Another photo after the break, and yes, its worth the click.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has decided to celebrate Gundam by decking a the plus-size 777-300 model with Gundam decals/ The plane made its first Tokyo-Osaka trip this weekend after a photo session of course.
Sadly no actual Gundams were present for the festivities.
Hetalia: Axis Powers will go down in history as one of mankind’s greatest crimes. I’m not even sure how to begin to explain why, as basically it involves every single thing in the anime. All I can do is describe the visceral sensation felt when, after watching the first few episodes and slowly realizing with mounting horror the nightmare I had just unleashed, my mind suddenly collapsed in on itself and I was left a hollow shell of seething hatred. For over two months, I roamed a shattered doomscape, nameless and forgotten, haunted by the malevolent visage that was this brutal persecutor. Now, miraculously returned from this desert of suffering, violence and casual evil, I’m here as a living example to warn others and keep them from a similar fate.
