We're smack in the middle of another season of animation brewed in the seediest of Nihon maid cafes! I have to admit, when I first looked at the lineup for this season I felt considerably less optimistic compared to the previous two (or three). Last season we had the INCREDIBLE Madoka Magica and the goodness that was Fractale (not to mention a good number of harem ecchi shows that might rank among my favs). There's nothing QUITE on that epic level this time around, but thats not from lack of trying. This season, however, the slice-of-life shows are totally bringing their A game! If you're not into that sort of thing...well...I'm sorry your parents never hugged you enough o3o
This time I will refrain from making a massive list of impressions and just let you look at the full lineup (including OADs, OVAs, and movies) in this nifty link. Of course there's nothing new here for anyone who actively follows the fansubbing scene every day, but for those of you who have lives and want to plan what you watch over the summer, tada! (
Spring 2011 Lineup! )
It pains me greatly to have to CHOOSE a select few shows to comment on, but I figure I could always roll out blog style quips every now and then when something strikes me in an episode (not that anyone reading this cares, I'm just a narcissist like that).
RaShay's pick!
Hanasaku Iroha

I had the HARDEST time not making three shows my "pick" but Ohana and the gang totally win in this game with no losers. The characters are just CHARMINGLY drawn. Absolutely cute as all hell! They are also incredibly well written to be as endearing and sexy as possible. I can NOT get through an entire episode of this show without roaring from moe/cute overload! There's tons of legit laughs too. I want all the waitresses to be mai waifus! o3o;
Other goodies!
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

This show is riddled with cuties. The last time a show's opening and ending music impressed me this much was season one of Spice and Wolf. Like the goofy sound or not, there's some serious musical brilliance going on here (the out of tune vocals in the opening are just so damn addictive). The show itself has tons of laugh out loud moments and cute girls--making it one of my favorites this season. Guys who are into legs will dig episode one for sure *creepy face*
30-sai no Hoken Taiiku

RIDICULOUSLY, RETARDEDLY, UNFORIVINGLY HILARIOUS! If you don't like this show after episode 1 then I'm sorry you're actually a robot created to serve humans and possess no emotions or the ability to laugh your ass off. The end credits is probably the cutest part of this show (I think the idea is goddamn genius).
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai
Shows with ridiculously long names seem to be a trend as of late, with Ano Hana probably being second only to the monstrous "Moshi Koko Yakyu no Joshi Manager ga Drucker no Management o Yondara" (another ridiculously cute show that I enjoyed despite my lack of interest in sports). Ano Hana is a very bittersweet show about a group of childhood friends who sadly grow apart after a tragedy. What happens next is adorable, down to earth, heartwarming, and totally charming. There's also a hot tsundere so I mean this one was in the bag, no problem.
For Harems
Hoshizora e Kakaru Hoshi

Based on the visual novel game (WHICH NEEDS TO BE TRANSLATED), Hoshizora contains all the cheap, predictable characters you love and expect from every harem show designed for us perverts. There's really not much ecchi (so far) but the girls are ridiculously cute and fit the spread of harem archetypes quite well. Its hilarious as balls too!
The serious show
C (Control): The Money of Soul and Possibility
At least this long title is in INGURISHU (im sorry, dont kill me). This is probably the closest thing this season has to the likes of an epic show (aside from Deadman Wonderland). I enjoy it a LOT and find the main character's asset (sort of like a summoned being to fight for them) RIDUNKULOUSLY hot. The story so far contains a lot of interesting mysteries and memorable characters surrounding the protagonist.
Other mentions I dont have room to write about but you should totally check out!
Tiger and Bunny- fun to watch just to wrap your head around how much advertising money this show must make
Fireball Charming- a weird/cute/funny show about robots. The dialogue is full of japanese wordplay
Ao no Exorcist- pretty cool supernatural show
Deadman Wonderland- psychological thriller with awful opening music and tons of blood!
Moshi Koko Yakyu no Joshi Manager ga Drucker no Management o Yondara- its about baseball kind of!
Nichijou- cute and pretty random slice of life
Shouwa Monogatari- a realistic historical slice of life show
Steins;Gate- a hilarious take on time travel science fiction based on a good visual novel game
Dororon Enma kun Merame ra- might be the goofiest thing you have ever seen--with lots of old school 60's vibe!
Phew! Enjoy and ALWAYS demand panty-shots!
