The online newspaper Japan Today reported that Japanese megacarrier
NTT DoCoMo is considering launching services in the US next year. They would launch as a full service virtual operator leasing network capacity from either AT&T or T-Mobile. Currently via a USA subsidiary NTT DoCoMo already has business relationships with both these carriers.
At the present time there is already a subdued presence in the US for this company with locations in New York and Hawaii. The locations however are meant for travelling Japanese tourists and business people that are in need of assistance with their hands sets and roaming capabilities. The bulk of NTT DoCoMo's US pressence is limited to tradeshows such as CTIA.
The significance for this comes in that we might get to see a fully working
Eva cellphone that is not obscenely marked up on ebay. Of course the Anime News dot Biz is reporting that the article does nt eleborate on whether DoCoMo would launch with their Japanese handset lineup or rely on smart devices from HTC, Sharp and Toshiba. The company however specifically mentions the success of the iPhone and smartphones in general during the recession in US which at the moment is their reasoning for entering the market.
