Resident Evil 5: Zombies In Africa!
Posted by Kishiro in Video Games March 24, 2009 at 02:52:05 PM

Let's talk zombies.
I know this review is kind of late, but I've been playing the game so much and loving it, I just haven't had time for write the article. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Hey, it's only been like a week and a half since it came out. Give me a break.

The game, whether you get it on XB360 or PS3 is simply beautiful, first and foremost. It's well constructed, smooth, and the visuals are really something to behold. Gotta love the dark and grainy feel of it, it just wouldn't be Resident Evil without it.

You start off in a dusty town in Africa, and then all hell breaks loose. Alpha team its owned, and Delta team saves your butt. I really don't want to give away much more than that so far as story goes. There are references to Jill Valentine made from early on in the game, and even mention of Leon Kennedy's report on the events of Resident Evil 4 in the first level. The virus affecting the people in this area is similar to that of RE4, so you'll see familiar mutations, but there is something different about it.
And you'll notice it right away.

Remember them? More importantly, remember him? Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. You play as Chris as the main protagonist in RE5, but he looks a bit different. And he has a new partner, named Sheva.

Don't they look nice?

Capcom has done a wonderful job of designing the people in this game, improving on the already very nice looking RE4 engine and designs.

So you're wondering about gameplay right? Well, it plays almost identical to RE4, with a few slight change ups. There is a quick menu that allows you to organize and assign things to D-Pad directions on the fly, as well as pass items between you and your partner. Sheva will be played by the computer, or anyone who joins your game, either locally, via system link, or online. And SURPRISE, the AI actually does a good job of controlling her! A lot of times, much better than your online partner probably will.

You can't move and shoot. I'm just going to tell you that now. But that's ok. You really don't need to. For a couple reason. The number one being it's a survival horror game. It's not Resistance, Killzone, Gears of War, or Halo. Get over it. Enjoy the game because it's exactly as it is meant to be, and if you aren't a scrub, you'll get through it just fine at least.

The typical arsenal of weapons and items you've come to love and expect in a Resident Evil game are present.... Though umm... you can't buy ammo, and there is no vendor in any of the levels. That's right, yeah... purple trench coat guy standing between to flames is not present. However, the game does a good job of dropping ammo all around the levels fairly often, and you still have your knife to use to cut people up should they want to get in your face. I actually enjoyed that, especially when a knife hit stuns them, and you get prompted for a melee attack.

There are plenty of quick action prompts in the game, where you have the press the right button or you'll most likely die. There are scary people who chase you with axes and chainsaws that are like mini-bosses that take a good long while to kill, or you have to outlast until support shows up.

Easter eggs are included too. Shoot the BSA emblems and get stuff. Weee. Treausres are to be found as well, sell them for cash! You know the drill. Or at least I hope you do, because this review is so not newcomer friendly.

But the game is definitely worth playing, and beating. And playing again, with all your new weapons and items and money, and beating it again. And getting more things, and beating it AGAIN. It has more of a story than Left 4 Dead, and does offer more of a challenge. What's also nice is that you can play it alone on the hardest difficulty and actually stand a chance.

So what are you waiting for? Go play Resident Evil 5 if you have a PS3 or XB360.
For the rest of you, sorry about your luck! I'm off to kill more zombies.
